Within the research area "Health", the HZI program aims at the understanding of infectious diseases and immunity. The main focus of HZI is to study virulence factors, host-pathogens interactions and immunity to develop novel combat strategies against human infectious diseases. Building on a broad expertise in chemistry, structural biology, bioinformatics, genetics, cell biology, cellular microbiology, immunology, and bacterial ecology, HZI concentrates its research activities to unravel basic mechanisms of infections. These studies will form the basis for the development of new strategies to fight infectious diseases and, in close collaboration with other institutes, be translated into clinical applications. This work will be carried out in the Department of Medical Microbiology.
Partner 8 is responsible for WP3.

Key contributors to activities are: Dr. Dietmar Pieper, Team leader; Dr. Andreas Itzek, PhD; Dr. Patric Nitsche-Schmitz, PhD; Anshu Babbar. Dr. Gursharan S Chhatwal (deceased) made indispensable contributions in the application phase and early phases of the project.
