Blekinge Hospital, Karlskrona, Sweden
The hyperbaric medicine section is organized under the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care. It is, besides Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm and Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, the only hyperbaric medicine facility in Sweden with round-the-clock capability for emergency hyperbaric oxygen treatments. The hyperbaric chamber that is used belongs to the Swedish Armed Forces Diving School and is located at the Karlskrona Navy Base some 5 km from the hospital. Being a referral centre for hyperbaric medicine means that the hospital has acquired a valuable experience in treating seriously and critically ill patients with “Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections” (NSTI´s) based on a close cooperation between the Departments of Anesthesiology and Intensive care, Surgery, Orthopedics and Infectious Diseases.
